Each month, the West End Hotel**** has decided to put the spotlight on its employees through a series of questions, in order to find out more about their jobs and what drives them in the course of their duties. Today, the hotel is honouring Maria Da Veiga, the hotel’s general housekeeper.

Can you introduce yourself?
I’m 42 years old and I’ve been working as a General Housekeeper at the West End Hotel for around 2 years now. After obtaining a BTS (HND) in Business Administration, I ended up in the hotel business by chance, and one thing led to another and I became a General Housekeeper. My job consists of controlling the rooms, directing the floor staff and managing the housekeeping side of things.

Why are you so passionate about your job?
What I enjoy most about being a General Housekeeper is being out in the field. Every day is different and I’m constantly on the go!

What advice would you give to an employee just starting out?
To do this job you have to be passionate about it! It’s not an easy job, you need to be patient, but you also need to be rigorous and have an eye for detail. It’s also a job that demands rigour… every detail is important!

What’s your favourite part of the West End Hotel?
Without hesitation, the rooms, because the view is incredible! It’s really nice to work in these conditions. It makes work easier!

What are your best memories?
My best memories are undoubtedly the moments of sharing with my colleagues! It keeps us motivated! Staff parties are also organised regularly… and they’re great for keeping the team together!

Finally, what advice would you give customers to make the most of their stay?
You can’t stay in Nice without visiting the château… The view is incredible. You can’t help but be amazed by the view of the Promenade des Anglais.

One of the greatest assets of the West End hotel, with its Belle Époque architecture, is undoubtedly its exceptional location on the Promenade des Anglais. This 7km-long avenue along the seafront, facing the infamous Baie des Anges. But do you know its story ?

The Promenade des Anglais has its origins in the early 19th century. At that time, tourists did not come during the summer, but in winter. British aristocrats came to spend the winter in the south, to escape the cold climate of northern Europe. They were known as winterers. They settled for a few months in the South of France, particularly in Nice.

In 1822, an English reverend – Lewis Way – asked wealthy English visitors of the Riviera, to donate money to build a promenade along Nice’s seafront. For the English, the wide-open avenues and sea air had therapeutic properties, and for the inhabitants, it was an opportunity to give them work. To thank the English people behind the project, the avenue was christened ” la camin dei ingles ” and later became the Promenade des Anglais, or the “Prom” for the people who were more familiar with it.

Could you introduce yourself?
After completing a work-study program in Business Management, I was offered the position of Bursar at 3A Hôtels La Collection in June 2022. The bursar’s role involves overseeing supplies and monitoring inventory at the group’s three establishments: the Aston La Scala, the West End and the Beau Rivage. I’m also responsible for identifying the needs of each department before placing the necessary orders. My main task is to keep stocks at an optimum level, making sure we’re never out of stock.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I particularly like about my job is that, although every day is different, it’s crucial to be well organized, since you’re working independently. In fact, organization is the key to getting the job done right. The advantage of working alone is that you can progress at your own pace, and here I work in good conditions and in a magnificent setting.

What advice would you give to an employee just starting out?
It’s a job that involves a lot of responsibility, so if I had to give one piece of advice to a beginner, it would be not to put too much pressure on yourself, even though, as a bursar, you’re in charge of the hotel’s wallet.

What’s your favorite part of the West End Hotel?
One of my favorite places at the West End is the mezzanine of Le Siècle restaurant, because it’s such a magnificent setting! We meet there every week with the teams. It’s a friendly place where staff can get together to keep the hotel running smoothly.

What are your best memories?
Every year, the team organizes an end-of-season cocktail party. It’s a great opportunity to get together as a team, and it’s always a good time that leads to great projects.

Finally, what advice would you give customers to make the most of their stay?
Don’t hesitate to talk to the staff at the West End Hotel, who are always ready to offer their best advice.

To celebrate Easter on Sunday 31 March, Le Siècle restaurant is inviting visitors and locals alike to enjoy a delicious lunch. Can you introduce yourself ?
“I’ve been living in Nice for about 5 years. I moved here from the north of France with my future wife. After working as a receptionist in a 5-star hotel, I wanted to take my career to the next level and, for the last 3 months, I’ve been Assistant Reception Manager at this magnificent West End Hotel. My job involves a lot of work. I’m Marie’s right-hand woman, the Head of Reception. My role is to make sure that the reception goes as smoothly as possible! It’s a job that requires you to be on all fronts and meet guests’ expectations so that they feel at their best during their stay.”

What are you most passionate about in your job ?
“The most exciting and rewarding part of the job is the contact with customers. To do this job, you need to have an excellent sense of welcome and service. But you also need to be available, smiling and a good listener. You also need to be able to bounce back and take decisions quickly. What I also like about this job is that no two days are the same!”

What advice would you give to an employee just starting out?
“You don’t get into this job by chance! If I had to give advice to an employee just starting out, I’d tell them to do it with passion and desire first and foremost, because it’s a job that takes time and a lot of commitment; it’s a job that requires you to be very diplomatic and to have a great capacity for adaptation. You have to stand your ground in any situation”

What is your favourite place in the West End Hotel?
“If I had to choose just one place, I’d go for the lobby. It feels like a film set, with its charm and Belle Époque spirit!”

What are your fondest memories?
“I haven’t worked in the hotel for very long, but generally speaking, my fondest memories are when guests thank me warmly at the end of their stay. It warms my heart.”

Finally, what advice would you give customers to make the most of their stay?
“I’d advise them to book a room with a sea view, because the view of the Promenade des Anglais from the West End hotel is truly magnificent! And to make the most of their stay, I’d strongly recommend that they stroll around the old town, along the Cours Saleya… and don’t hesitate to visit the small producers to discover the specialities of the region”

The restaurant also offers unusual evenings – opera evenings – which take place every other Friday until spring 2024. A unique concept on the Côte d’Azur, these evenings allow you to dine to the sound of the greatest opera arias. Based on the concept of the singing waiters – in other words, when the waiters start singing opera arias in the middle of the service – these themed meals are open to locals and visitors alike.
