History and tradition

Promenade des Anglais

Birth of the Côte d’Azur

At the start of the 19th century, English aristocrats climbed up to the small Mediterranean hilltop villages.

Dazzled by the azure light, charmed by the gentle climate, English Lords decided to stay, building villas decorated with flowers, and immaculate palaces: the French Riviera was born. Russian princes, Austrian Archdukes, Italian countesses and French dandies, still later, American ex-patriots and Russians in exile, all took part in the glory of this incandescent paradise.

From the path to the Promenade des Anglais

Following the severe winter of 1820-1821, begging was on the increase and the Reverend Lewis Way, his wife and his brother-in-law Charles Whitby collected funds to make it possible to employ the unemployed. They had them build a pathway 2 metres wide along the sea front. This "Camin dai Ingles" was developed in 1840 by the council of Nice. In 1844, having been extended as far as Les Baumettes, it was officially named the "Promenade des Anglais".

Built in 1842, the Hotel West End, at that time the Hotel de Rome, then Villa Victoria, welcomed the cream of high society. King Frederick Auguste 3rd, the Grand Duke Constantin Nikolaï and the Queen of the Netherlands, Sophie de Wurtemberg arrived there with their followers and organised lavish parties, such as a Christening for a prince...
