Each month, the West End Hotel**** puts the spotlight on one of its employees by asking them to answer a few questions to help us better understand their job, what they do and what motivates them on a daily basis. This month, the hotel invites you to meet Tomoko, receptionist.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Tomoko and I’m Japanese, originally from Tokyo. I’m 36 years old, I’ve been living in Nice for almost three years and I’ve been working as a receptionist at the West End Hotel for the last ten months. My role is to check in, look after the concierge and always welcome guests with a smile!

What do you love most about your job?

What I love most about my job is meeting people from all over the world. What’s also really interesting is that there’s no one way of treating customers. Everyone is different! You have to know how to adapt. That makes the job even more dynamic and rewarding.

What advice would you give to a new employee?

I would advise him to take the time to immerse himself in the world of the hotel. Coming from another establishment can sometimes be disorientating, because the West End is like no other. It’s essential to get to know the place, appreciate its history and understand what makes it so special. Each room, with its unique style and character, tells a story that contributes to the charm and beauty of the hotel.

What is your favourite place in the West End Hotel?

My favourite place is the reception area, where I love admiring the sea view. Its colour changes every day, as does the sunlight, which varies with the seasons. I don’t have this kind of comfort in Tokyo, which is why I chose to come and live here, for the exceptional living environment.

What are your fondest memories of the hotel?

One of my fondest memories is the first time I set foot in the West End Hotel. The beauty of the building, with its Belle Époque architecture, really impressed me, as did the warm welcome from the staff at reception. Everyone was very smiley and made me feel very welcome.

Another lasting memory is the time I met some Japanese customers. They were happy to see me working here, and that really touched me. It was a special moment for me, because it reminded me of home in Tokyo.

What advice would you give customers to make the most of their stay?

I would highly recommend that customers discover the city of Nice. My favourite place is the old town, with its unique atmosphere and charming little streets.
I’d also advise them to start their stay with a ride on the little tourist train. In fact, it was the first thing I did when I arrived here. It gives you an excellent overview of the city and its main sights.
